The Brothel Question: A Historical and Sociological Analysis Lecture by Andreas Ziemann

Brothels as well as the subsequent brothel question arise as a historical answer to the state regulation of biological instincts of a population, especially the civil society. The local quartering shall also prevent uncontrolled expansion of immoral and criminal milieu in other, well-kept city districts. As a “lesser evil” and also “necessary evil” brothels are – specifically in the 19th century – the answer to problems of social order in general as well as on problems of moral corruption, sexually transmitted diseases, crime, sex education or about the aesthetics of the large urban life in particular.
