Techno-Textiles Between Hand Gestures and Machine Operations Artist Talk with Anette Rose about her work “Captured Motion” with Carmen Alfaro Giner, Birgit Schneider and Iris Tzachili

The installation "Captured Motion" examines translation processes between hand and machine, between grasping and comprehension. I observe how manual labor is replaced by machines, but also how hands explain machines with gestures. For my artistic work and exhibition practice, framing, synchronization and montage are pivotal. Videos of my "Encyclopedia of Manual Operations", which I filmed in a textile research laboratory, are to be shown. These videos on the one hand record the movements of complex textile machinery, on the other hand they are motion captures of engineers describing these machines gesturally. The emerging lines of hand movements accompanying the speech correlate with the threads that form a kind of leitmotif of the work. A network of expressive movements establishes volatile sculptures, while machines run threads, place, knit, enmesh, cross, weave and intertwine.
