Models of the field

Of all the various manifestations and uses of models, the project ‘Models of the Field’ takes as its starting point one of their specific qualities: models form an excellent medium of transfer between different areas of knowledge. While oscillating between their representative and projective function, they produce a special form of clear accessibility which facilitates transfer and appropriation by other areas of knowledge. The function of models as objects designed to give material representation to subjects or circumstances, or to secure acceptance of planned buildings or projects, has been expanded to include a further function: the illustration of complex interconnections. They are even used to conceptualize a materialization of the non-material, a materialization which, as a medium between measurable phenomena and our perception, informs the concepts used to describe it. Experimental arrangements of this kind, which expand the concept of the model, constitute the subject of this project: models of electromagnetic fields and their visual representations. The aim here is to understand to what extent models are turning away from the representation of tangible, static phenomena, and towards the representation of forces, energies and structural forms which are in constant motion. The project is dedicated to the history of these models, and of the changes to the way we imagine our environment, changes transported by these models. The attempt to follow the circulation of these models between different areas of knowledge is based on the assumption that models act: they transmit a constructive relationship to reality, inform creative activity on various levels, and offer a material level of engagement for cognitive processes.
