Vita
Geoffrey Winthrop-Young has been Professor and Head of the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia since 2010. Having studied German, English and Modern History at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Germany, he graduated in 1985. He received his Ph.D. in German Studies at the University of British Columbia in 1991 with a dissertation that was awarded by the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German. In 1995 he was appointed Assistant Professor for Germanic Studies at the University of British Columbia. Winthrop-Young has been Visiting Fellow and Assistant Professor at several institutions, e.g. at the University of Manitoba (1991/92), at the University of Waterloo (1994/95), at the Institute for German Studies, Cornell University (1999/00) and at the Department of German, University of Chicago (2002). Geoffrey Winthrop-Young is co-editor of the book series “Recursions: Theories of Media, Materiality and Cultural Techniques”, published by Amsterdam University Press, as well as a member of the advisory board of the journals “Zeitschrift für Medienwissenschaft” and “Cultural Politics”. He is also a member of the editorial board of the collected works of Friedrich Kittler “Gesammelte Werke: Schriften, Stimmen, Hard- und Software” and a renowned translator of Kittler’s writings.
