Vita

After his graduation in Literary and Musical Studies at Paris-Nanterre and at the Conservatories of Versailles and Paris, Michel Chion began to work for the ORTF (French Radio and Television Organization) as an assistant to Pierre Schaeffer in 1970. From 1971 to 1976, he was a member of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales du Service de la Recherche, where he served as programme director for radio broadcasts and publications director. Next to these activities, he composed works of musique concrète at the studios of the GRAM including Requiem and several other concrète melodramas, a dramatic form which he inaugurated in 1972 with Le prisonnier du son (The Prisoner of Sound). From 1981 to 1986, he was editor of the Cahiers du Cinéma. Since 1993, Michel Chion is Associate Professor at the département cinéma at Paris III. He is also Professor at the ESEC and the École Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne as well as Honorary Professor of the University in Buenos-Aires.
